Bruce Springsteen is at his loose-limbed best in the electrifying new video for “Sherry Darling” from the upcoming first-time release of the band’s Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts film. The singer, 31 at the time, is a ball of energy as he bounds across the stage in black jeans and a grey sport coat, swinging his guitar behind his back as he leans in to address the crowd in the front rows.
The film will be distributed globally in HD for digital download on Nov. 16, and it will arrive Nov. 19 in physical formats, with bundles available on CD and DVD, CD with Blu-Ray and vinyl and digital rental beginning on Nov. 23. It’s the first time the film is being released worldwide and it will feature 10 performances and full footage of the entire setlist from the shows held on Sept. 21-22, 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York at a time when the Boss was between his fourth and fifth studio albums, Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River.
Both nights open with a trio of songs from the former and feature then-unreleased songs from the latter, including “Sherry Darling” and “The River,” which got its live debut at No Nukes. “You can tell her there’s a hot sun beating on the black top/ She keeps talking she’ll be walking that last block/ She can take a subway back to the ghetto tonight,” Bruce sings as the E Street Band blasts out the song’s rock and roll waltz behind him, complete with the obligatory double sax solo from late on-stage foil Clarence Clemons.
Known for his high-energy shows, Springsteen, rocking a pompadour, is a live wire in the “Darling” preview from the movie, dancing around and thrusting his hips at the folks in the first few rows and swinging around so wildly near the end of the five-minute clip that he accidentally unplugs his guitar.
The No Nukes film was edited by longtime Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny from the original 16mm footage alongside remixed audio from Bob Clearmountain, according to a statement and it also features performances of classics “Prove It All Night,” “Badlands,” “The Promised Land,” “Thunder Road,” “Jungleland,” “Rosalita Come Out Tonight” and “Born to Run.”
